Since the first days of my studies I found out that communist-theory and the study of its implementation practices fascinates me. I could easily explain this interest of mine. I was born in a communist country - Bulgaria. I spent my early childhood under communist regime, yet I did not remember much. Many people were disgruntled with the regime and were satisfied with its overthrow while others were nostalgic and dissatisfied with the new political and economical situation in Bulgaria. This contradiction determined me to find a truth for myself.
My honor's thesis tries to prove that democracy is much more then having the right to vote, that in order a state to be democratic its people need to have certain democratic values having priority over others, economically-oriented, values. In my thesis I explore the institutions of post-communist Bulgaria and the various factors that led to the fell of the communist regime. I conclude that what made the changes was the economy and not the people. The people, even after having democratic institutions were not democratic-minded themselves.
